Prescription Drug Fraud

Prescription fraud is explained as the wrongful gain of prescription drugs for profit or personal use without a validated physician’s prescription. This crime has become an alarming and increasing issue. Almost fifty percent of all police enforcement agencies polled in a 2000 survey said prescription drug fraud was a current problem in their department. The alarming rise in prescription drug fraud is leading to a correlating increase of arrest for the crime annually as well.

Prescription fraud occurs in number of manners including:
  • Illegally obtaining a practicing physician’s valid prescription pad and writing fictitious prescriptions
  • Changing a doctor’s prescription increasing the amount of the drug to be administered
  • A falsified prescription is formulated with the use of a computer, through the use of a fictitious doctor’s name or forging a previous  prescription from a valid physician
  • Patient’s phoning in their own prescription and using own number as the doctor confirmation line
The aforementioned methods are only a sampling of the ever evolving means of committing prescription drug fraud. Determining the range in which the problem has evolved is still unclear to even law enforcement.
Prescription drug fraud law enforcement actions has occurred throughout the United States, and even in some cases, the involvement of public figures such as Rush Limbaugh and Florida Governor Jeb Bush’s daughter add more spotlight to this increasing crime.  The prescription drug fraud crisis transcends all levels of society, and the affects from this prescription drug abuse threatens all citizens. Means of identifying possible prescription drug fraud include:
  • Prescriptions displaying precise handwriting, which is uncommonly found among physicians
  • Dosages and amounts of prescription vary heavily from the standard dosages
  • Physician instructions on prescription lacks medical abbreviations or technical language
  • Prescriptions exhibit different inks
  • Prescriptions possessing multiple versions of handwriting
  • Prescriptions which appear Xeroxed
The only means of stopping prescription drug fraud is by closing scrutinizing this problem and enforcing laws in place via arrests. The bulk of responsibility in fighting this rash of crime lies in the hands of physicians, pharmaceutical companies, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and law enforcement agents.  More stringent efforts must be made in conserving the access to prescriptions for these drugs as well as more regulations and security in the dispensing of these drugs by pharmacies. The benefits of prescription drugs are unquestionable, but with these benefits come the responsibility to ensure that they are used properly and safely.

Every Single Drug That Affects The Body Will Have Some Side Effects

Since the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers both the benefits and risks of all medications before approval, side effects are generally not serious. For every drug FDA approves, the benefits are balanced against its risks.
