FDA and Drug Recalls

The Food and Drug Administration approves every drug that is sold in the United States. If the FDA determines through research and testing that a particular drug is harmful or substandard, the manufacturer is notified and asked to remove the drug from the market. While most companies will voluntarily remove their product from the market if flaws are detected, the FDA can also insist on court orders if the manufacturer does not comply.

Drug recall vs. drug withdrawal

The FDA approaches the manufacturer with the request to either temporarily (drug recall) or completely (drug withdrawal) remove the product from the market. A drug recall is mainly requested if there is an error in the medication, including contaminations, mislabeling, and dosage errors. A drug withdrawal is issued if a multitude of serious side effects or deaths have reported directly from patients taking the medication.

Categories of drug recall

Class I - Dangerous/defective products that imply possible health problems
Class II - Implies temporary health problems and less serious threats
Class III - Products unlikely to cause problems, but don’t comply with FDA standards

Every Single Drug That Affects The Body Will Have Some Side Effects

Since the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers both the benefits and risks of all medications before approval, side effects are generally not serious. For every drug FDA approves, the benefits are balanced against its risks.
