Bextra Litigation

Bextra, a prescription drug, was approved by the FDA in May 2001. Four years later, on April 7, 2005 the manufacturer Pfizer Inc. announced a voluntary withdrawl of Bextra from all markets, as safety concerns were on the rise.

Bextra is a drug which is prescribed in order to treat symptoms of osteoarthritis, acute pain and pain due to rheumatoid arthritis in adults as well as in children. During the late 1990s several COX-2 drugs, such as Vioxx and Celebrex reached a wide range of popularity as they all treated inflammation. At that time, there was a multitude of anti inflammatories on the market. However, only a few were known to protect the stomach against common anti inflammatory side effects, such as bleeding ulcers.

• Blood clots
• Stevens Johnson Syndrome
• Menstrual abnormalities
• Tinitus
• Hot flushes

As the FDA approved new labeling for Bextra, specific warnings include the possibility of skin reactions, such as Steven-Johnson Syndrome as well as toxic epidermal necrolysis. At the same time, there are upgraded warnings about possible heart and blood clotting problems on the new labels.
